CALIFORNIA -- Carlesbad:<font color = "black">
Ukulele Society of America (USA) meets Thursday evenings in Carlsbad, CA at the Ocean House restaurant, under the direction and tutelage of Uncle Pat "Palika" Enos, noted teacher, performer, and housemate of Bill Tapia, 100 year old ukulele legend. Bill is a frequent guest at USA kanikapila. There are about 150 members, of which 60 or so attend the weekly kanikapila. Members receive instruction, camaraderie, and lots of group and solo (if you want to - nobody is forced) playing time at the weekly meetings, which feature a mix of Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian music with a bit of hula thrown-in for good measure. Members also have access to dozens of songs with lyrics and chords on the group's website. There is no fee to join. The only cost is a $2.00 fee to attend the weekly kanikapila. It's a great group of folks at all levels of playing ability.

DESERT OASIS STRUMMERS

The premiere ukulele group in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs) area, we have an extensive--and growing--song book of tunes ranging from the Ukulele Classics to the Great American Songbook to the Beatles. Our core instrument is the ukulele, but we have members playing the tenor guitar, the bass guitar, the banjo, and even the tiple.
<p>
We meet on Fridays at the La Quinta Senior Center, and have just recently added Wednesday sessions at the Joslyn Senior Center in Palm Desert. Both days from 1:00 to 3:00. (During August only, we are meeting both days at the Joslyn location.)

Our Springfield, Missouri Uke Group is called the "Happy Plunkers Ukulele Band." We have 15 members, we practice weekly on Friday mornings at the Fireside Room at the First Baptist Church. At present, we have 20 Hawaiian Steel Guitar members and 17 Ukulele members. This group is lead by George "Keoki" Lake and has no boundries when it comes to enthusiasm and love of Hawaiian music. They perform on average about once per month at seniors lodges, hospitals, etc. Amongst the group are excellent vocalists, and 5 hula dancers who have studied the hula.
