People ask "What is Sapele?" Sapele is sometimes called African mahogany and has the same reddish-brown color. When you buy guitar many times mahogany or sapele are used interchangeablely.

For an exotic wood, sapele is "relatively secure" and is responsibly harvested. The best grades of sapele are reported to feature a fine pencil stripe of uniform width. A number of stringed instrument makers have signed with the FSC for responsible in their use of exotic wood.
